Recently, I have developed an interest in dissecting regional discourses related to sci-fi. I am exploring how authors from various regions contribute to the sci-fi genre by creating futuristic worlds that incorporate elements of their indigenous cultures. My focus is specifically on Pakistani sci-fi, which uniquely blends fantasy, magical realism, and scientific epistemology. This genre is still emerging, and the number of sci-fi writers in Pakistan can be counted on one hand, including Usman T. Malik, Bina Shah, Omar Iftikhar, Omar Gilani, and Sidra F. Sheikh, who are shaping the portrayal of a futuristic Pakistani society. As Pakistan is a postcolonial country, I am examining these narratives from an indigenous perspective while also considering Western influences. The pre-independence era was marked by prosperity and authority; the struggles faced during the colonial period, along with the depiction of a glorious pre-colonial past, inform the construction of these futuristic worlds.
